Four courses of ornamental sandstone, in alternating lines of two short blocks and single blocks. Unique patterns of broad, curved lines and shapes are carved within a rectangular border. The spaces inside the lines are filled with deep, dark fissures, their edges thin and delicate, like the cells of a wasp’s nest.

Gum Blossoms 3

A close-up of a gum flower cluster where most of the flowers have morphed into new gumnuts coloured predominantly in a purple blush, with smaller patches of greenish cream. Only a few flowers round the bottom edge of the cluster still have their fringe of red filaments and tiny asters. The gumnuts are shaped like little goblets covered with pointy domes, and bulging where they join the stem.

Rooted: Milsons Point, Sydney

The mossy side of a sandstone cliff, and the flowing, contorted roots of a Moreton Bay Fig tree, merge together as if they are part of a single entity. A black hole stands between two broken and weathered layers of stone, and green leaves shoot from a scattering of twigs. The stone and the tree share dark grey stains from decades of passing motor vehicles.

Where Pigeons Dare

Milsons Point Station, Sydney

A circular metal sculpture in the shape of a ring, made from individual sections welded together, with a flat plate at each join. The sections have cutouts in swirly shapes, cogwheel shapes, spirals and ellipses, and one contains steel bars set in a zigzag pattern like a bridge. The main structure stands on a steel wedge shaped like a shark fin, which in turn is bolted to a concrete plinth. The sculpture stands on grass beside a path, with a wall and train station behind it. A pigeon sits on the very top of the ring. Three pigeons sit at the bottom, inside the ring, and others on two of the metal plates that lie horizontally. A dozen pigeons sit on the concrete plinth, and two on the grass. The sky is white - washed out.

Hard Times

Three dark stone steps lead up to a restaurant door and window. The interior is warmly lit and filled with customers. In the cold, grey light outside, two pugs huddle together on the top step. One lies with its chin on the step while the other, behind it, half sits and half leans against the window like a wounded soldier, its head turned towards a man about to walk inside. The dogs are small, but have thick black rope and strong brass clips locked onto their collars, enhancing the impression that they are condemned prisoners abandoned at the door.

A Ghost Gum (I think).

The tree is an Australian Eucalypt, a ghost gum, with smooth, pale grey bark, a forked trunk and long, thick branches spreading and forking over a wide area. The branches narrow gradually into clusters of twigs covered with leaves. The background is blue sky and green shrubs.

The Happiest Wall-Light

A shiny silver light fitting set into a stained sandstone block. The fitting is circular, with the top part curving outwards, and the bottom section cut out so that it resembles a mouth stretched wide in a big, happy grin.
